In May 2013, ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), announced the publication of a new safety standard for Crib Mattresses. The new standard, designated as ASTM F2933-13, provides safety and labeling requirements for Crib Mattresses.
Introduction
This safety specification establishes general requirements and labeling requirements both full size crib mattresses and non-full size crib mattresses. As defined within the standard, a mattress is a ticking filled with a resilient material used alone or in combination with other products, intended or promoted for being slept upon.
The safety standard for Crib Mattresses sets forth the following requirements:
General Requirements
Crib mattress must comply with federal safety standards (ie: CPSIA, 16 CFR 1632/1633, etc.)
No hazardous sharp points or edges
No small part choking hazards
Any paint or surface coating must comply with 16 CFR 1303
No finger entrapment hazards in rigid materials
Warning label permanency requirements
Warning labels shall not yield small part choking hazards
Mattress dimensions
Marking and Labeling Requirements
All Crib Mattresses shall comply with the specified requirements for warning statements
